Description

The walk sets off from Paderne and takes in Paderne Castle and the hamlets of Aldeia Pequena and Aldeia Grande.  The walk is of moderate difficulty and covers a distance of 11km or 6.8 miles (this is 3km longer than the Ilha Rosario walk) and will take approximately 3 hrs. There are options for walkers that do not wish to do the entire walk e.g. miss out the climb to Paderne castle, or after the castle retrace your steps back to Paderne. It is intended to have a refreshment stop at the bottom of the road/track to the castle.

The walk will be led by Keith & Alison Scott, with Dave Tweed organising the lunch.  The walk is open to members and their guests.  Walkers will be able to bring their dogs, but please be aware, that there may be loose dogs in the area and you will not be able to bring the dog into the lunch venue.

Additional Information

The castle's origins are Moorish, although it was extensively rebuilt during the Middle Ages and a chapel erected on the site of a former Mosque.  The castle is basically a ruin, however, monies have been approved for restoration, the first phase will focus on the Torre Albarrã, a one metre high defensive tower.  This investment for this first phase is €131,000, the total investment for Paderne castle is €590,000.

Note: It may not be possible to access the castle on the day of the walk.

Meeting Point/Parking

You will need a car for this walk; we will meet at Paderne leisure centre, which is on the right, just before you entre the village of Paderne.  The leisure centre is just before the cemetery, so if you pass this you have gone too far.  There is ample parking at the leisure centre, we will meet here at 09:45, ready to walk at 10:00 hrs. There are no facilities at this car park.

Equipment

Walking boots are advisable, however, sturdy walking shoes or trainers will be OK.  As we are stopping for lunch you should not require food for the walk, however, it is advisable to take plenty of liquid.

Captain's Charity

A voluntary contribution of 5 euro towards the Captain's Charity can be made to the organiser of the walk

Optional Lunch - “Tweedy’s bit”!

Lunch is now booked for 13:30 at Paraiso do Algarve, a 3 minute drive from the leisure centre car park. Photographs will follow, but it is a good restaurant in a lovely location, ideal also for those who are only doing the shortened walk (or not walking at all!). Their bar/café is open all day, where you can sit on the covered terrace, in the adjacent sun area, in the shade of the trees - or inside.

The all inclusive lunch price is €12 per person for couvert, main course with salad & chips, dessert, wine, beer, water and coffee. Main course choices are:- Grilled chicken, oven roasted pork stew, mixed omelette, squid with garlic.

I will send all relevant details to those who are lunching at the retaurant nearer the time (including full directions), but before then, would you please amend your website entry to include your main course choice, or email me with same to my Sapo address.

THE RESTAURANT IS GIVING US SEATS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 40 PERSONS, AS THEY HAVE ANOTHER BIG PARTY LATER THAT DAY.

GREAT RESPONSE, BUT WE HAVE ALREADY REACHED THE ABOVE NUMBER, SO FUTURE REQUESTS FOR LUNCH  WILL BE PUT ON A RESERVE LIST
