Description

April Captain’s Charity Walk

The April Captain’s charity walk will be held on Friday 26th April 2019, details as follows:

Description

This walk is the Mexlhoeira Nature walk, it starts at the Mexlhoeira Grande railway station.  The walk is 8km. or 5 miles, taking approximately 2 ½ hrs.  Following last month’s climb up to Paderne Castle, this is the easiest walk to date and is relatively flat. We will walk along a track to the Alvor estuary, between Alvor and Palmares golf Course, there is a loop around the nature reserve, making it an ideal walk for bird watchers.

Please note that dogs are welcome, but be prepared to meet other dogs that are not on a lead and may not be as friendly.  Dogs will probably not be allowed in the restaurant.

Meeting Point/Parking

We will meet at 09:45 for 10:00 start at Mexlhoeira Grande railway station (this is not in the actual village).  The best approach is from the N125, heading towards Lagos from Portimao. Drive past Penina golf club towards Lagos, you will pass under an overpass walk way and then reach a roundabout, where you can turn right for Mexlhoeira Grande, but at this roundabout turn left signposted to the Estação (station). As soon as you turn left, turn again immediately left again onto a single track road leading to the station (if you cross the railway line you have gone too far).  There is limited parking at the station, but the approach road is wide enough to park on.

Equipment

Waling boots are advisable, however, sturdy walking shoes or trainers will be OK. As this is a short walk you should not require food for the walk, however, it is advisable to take liquid.

Captain’s Charity

A voluntary contribution of 5 euro towards the Captain’s Charity can be made to the organiser of the walk

Optional Lunch (organised by Dave Tweed)

We will eat at “A CHOUPANA”, which is on the EN125 and only a one minute drive (west) from Mexhiloeira Grande Estação (on the left, immediately after the pedestrian bridge).

As mentioned at last months lunch, the house speciality there is suckling pig (at €15 pp on the menu), and whilst many of you said you would order that - I know of a few that definitely will not. So the deal options are as follows:-

Our all inclusive menu including couvert, main course, salad, chips, dessert, wine, beer & water is €15 if they serve suckling pig and chicken piri-piri on plates in the middle of each table. The other two options are vegetarian burgers (recommended by Monica, the boss), or fish fillets.

So please put PORK, CHICKEN, FISH, or VEGGY on the website when entering - or email your choice to Dave Tweed on his Sapo address.

ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED AND OF THE 38 LUNCHING, 31 HAVE REQUESTED THE SUCKLING PIG - WHICH IS FINE, BUT NORMALLY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN WE ARE PAYING (WE WERE EXPECTING A 50/50 SPLIT BETWEEN PORK & CHICKEN TO KEEP COSTS DOWN!).

SO, MADDY AND I WILL GO TO THE RESTAURANT ON EASTER MONDAY, TO CONFIRM EVERYTHING.

Please enter via the website stating if you are just walking, just eating or both.  Closing date for entries is 19 April 2019.
