The annual Golf Charity Day took place at Silves Golf Course on Friday, 6th July with 103 members and their guests taking part from both Serra de Monchique (SdM) and Silves International Golf Clubs (SICG).

All went very well and the Cup was won by a Team from SdM, Mick Caudle, Chris Zisimedes, Stephen Day and Les Jennings with a score of 140 points. They also received a memento trophy, golf shirts and balls donated by Blevins Franks. The format of the competition was teams of 4 with a minimum of 3 drives each and then each played their own ball, with 3 scores to count. There were nearest the pin prizes as well as a car worth 12,000 euros up for grabs for a Hole in One on the 16th. Sadly, no one achieved this, however the Captain’s Charities did benefit.

After the golf, all returned to the clubhouse for an excellent BBQ provided by Osvaldo and his team from Pestana. Entertainment during lunch was provided by “a Bit of the Poor Man’s Band” who had recently returned from their biggest gig ever in Amsterdam.

A chipping competition then took place in front of the clubhouse for all to see, sponsored by the Golf Shack, who donated a putter. This was won by Frank Waters (SICG) with an amazing chip that very nearly went in the hole.

An auction and raffle soon followed with various items donated by sponsors, Blevins Franks, Grasshopper Greens, O Barradas Restaurant, Ruccula, Dos Santos Bistro, Hickey’s Bar, Rob Cheney (Golf Professional),  Boavista, Benamor, Espiche, Brasserie Rosal, Bar Six, Wolf Restaurant and to Pestana for giving us the course for the day. After the prize giving “ a Bit of the Poor Man’s Band” saw out, what was a wonderful day, with a session of upbeat music.

Both Captains’ Charities will benefit from the funds raised on the day, a total of 4,250 euros. These are SdM – Lar de Criancas Bom Samaritano and SICG – the Children’s’ Homes in Albufeira and the Alzheimer Association.

Thanks go to the Joint Charity Committee for all their hard work in making this a very successful event, these being: Mel Huxtable, Warren Tennant, John Batallie, Howard Ridgeway, Alan Winstanley, Frank Wilson and of course to Yvonne Pyper and Karen Huxtable for their help at registration.

Euan Pyper, Captain SdM.
