Welcome to the home page of the Serra de Monchique Golf Club.
Please feel free to navigate through the site using the menu buttons on the top bar.
Serra de Monchique Golf Club is the club associated with Silves Golf Course. The club aims to provide competitions, control handicaps and to provide a social life for its members guided by the values statements authorised by the membership. Its rules are set up to provide a structure around which the club can be run.
Serra de Monchique Golf Club was formed in 2005, at Morgado de Reguengo when the regular players were invited to form a club. There were 30 founder members and the first General Meeting of the membership was held on 8th November 2005. At the end of 2006 the club moved to Silves Course, which had just opened. Mark Ellerton was appointed Captain for 2007. Pestana's very favourable terms of green fee arrangements led to an substantial increase in membership in 2008. Many Northern European countries are represented, including a number of Portuguese members.
The club plays competitions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Tuesdays are for singles competitions either as Monthly medal or Stableford Qualifier. On Thursdays some members play at Silves in a format of their own choice, but many members elect to play on the other courses within the Pestana group. On Saturdays there is a wide variety of game formats, normally as team competitions as pairs or teams of four players. There are occasional qualifying competitions on Saturdays to suit our members who are in full time employment. Our eventlist will show these.

88 Players participated in the annual Jimmy Goodfellow Quaich on Saturday and enjoyed all things Scottish.
Haggis, black pudding, smoked salmon, whisky, Drambuie made up some of the Half Way House Fare.
The Poor Man's Band entertained us with a selection of Gaelic songs and Di and Mags made a brave attempt at the Highland Fling - age no barrier!
The prizes were bought in Scotland a few weeks ago with donations from our Scottish members. Dawn, Jimmy's wife, kindly came along to present them to the lucky winners.
A great day fantastically supported by our membership.
The only non-Scottish element was the weather, for which we were so grateful!

This week saw the annual converging of SdM's Past Captains, all attended except Ray Groves who was unavailable as was current Captain Per Lars Tonstad.
The keenly contested stableford competition was played in very blustery and overcast conditions. We did have a very brief shower but generally very good weather.
The day was organised by Euan Pyper, he did his typically thorough job, everything running smoothly on the day and then for the lunch the following afternoon. Many thanks must go to the staff at Primavera in Carvoeiro for providing a superb meal.
There was the usual prize giving and a glass was raised in memory of Mark Ellerton who sadly passed away earlier in the year. He was sadly missed.

On Monday 6th of November we met Silves International Golf Club to fight for the Silves Challenge Trophy. It is the second year the two clubs have met for a nice round of golf.
38 players from each club competed in a very friendly atmosphere. People enjoyed coming together on a beautiful day, and many attended a very good lunch afterwards.
Most of the matches were very tight and finished all square.

A large field of happy golfers had lot of fun during Captain´s Drive in Saturday 1st April. To fit everybody in, we needed to shorten the interval between the groups from nine to eight minutes. That worked well, not much waiting and no big gap between any of the groups.
The new Captain Per Lars Tonstad drove in as early as 8 am, with many players watching. He found the fairway on his second attempt!
After golfing, around 50 players stayed for barbecue and others just for a drink. The food was good, and people enjoyed sitting in the sun and chat with others. Per Lars held his speech and introduced Rita Pinto, the leader of Castelo de Sonhos. She presented the organization chosen for the Captain´s Charity this year. Castelo the Sonhos is a local organization, based in Silves. During many years the have supported underprivileged people in our neighborhoud with food, clothes, furniture and other things needed. They also have special program for children that can´t live with their parents. The need for support is huge, and the club will find different ways of raising money for the charity throughout the year. The first day we collected €675, and Rita Pinto was very happy and grateful when she received the money. Finally outgoing captain Mags Taylor showed us how to putt, she made an impressive two-putt from a difficult position on the 18th green. Another great day in Algarve, and a great day for Serra de Monchique.
Read the wonderful article in this week's edition of The Portugal News detailing past SdM Captain Euan Pyper's trip accross Europe to help those in need in Ukraine.

What a great day.
We were very lucky with the weather for the Jimmy Goodfellow Quaich competition. It was wonderful to see a full house. This demonstrated the respect for Jimmy, a true Gentleman. 80 members including their guests turned up to celebrate the day and of course Saint Andrew by meeting for a tasty lunch and entertainment by the Poor Man’s Band. We were very honored that Dawn Goodfellow, accompanied by Daisy who agreed to present the prizes. €106 was raised for the Captain’s Charity, well done SdM and the all the prize winners. A big thanks to all the Scots who continue to donate some great prizes.
