Saturday the 24th Oct saw the 2020 running of the Serra de Monchique Golf Club President’s Day competition. The Seattle Shambles event saw 76 players (19 teams) competing to get their names on the honours board. After a chilly start the sun shone and the combination of little wind along with a well prepared course the conditions were just about perfect for golf. When the cards were returned it proved to be a competitive affair at the top of the leader board with the top seven teams being separated by only 3 points!
The prize winners were as follows:
Winners – Clive Davison, Bernard O’Reilly, Kieran O’Brien & Hilke Glienke (98pts)
Runners Up – Bob McMahon, Bob Cutt, Les Smith & Hans van der Laar (97pts, 52 back 9)
Third – Mel Huxtable, Richard Emrich, Ronnie Wraith, Jimmy Cruz (97pts, 49 back 9)

This year, considering we have had COVID, lockdown, travel restrictions and generally life has been "different" the generosity of others never ceases to amaze me.
Thanks to you, a massive 956 euros was raised on this years Pink Ladies Day. The dinner dance in March raised 406 euros. In total, so far this year the huge figure of 1,362 euros has been raised.
Half of the money raised will be sent to the AOA and the other half will be for "Algarve families in need" a local charity that SDM has been supporting through the current crisis.
On Saturday 19 September in near perfect weather conditions on a well prepared Silves Golf Course, Serra de Monchique Golf Club took to the fairways in a Pairs better ball format contesting the Captains Day substantial array of prizes.
The following evening at Brasserie Rosal restaurant respecting social distancing restrictions, Captain Des Briggs and wife Barbara presented the Captains Jug Trophy to the overall winners Stephen Day and Malcolm Marshal. This was followed by an excellent 3 course meal together with superb entertainment by the ABBA tribute girls Mandy and Elsa.

Many of our longer serving members will know Fernando and Vera Grave. Vera worked at Pestana Gramacho from 2007 until 2014 firstly in the reception and then at Navada Bobs.
In January 2015 they decided to open their own business, using their vast experience and knowledge here in Portugal they created “Everywhere Travel Agency”.
Both Fernando and Vera have worked for many years in the travel and tourism industry and have experience in accommodation, car rental, transportation and golf, hence they decided to follow their dream and create "Everywhere Travel Agency". With "Everywhere" you will find security in all of their services, a nice smile, good humor and great professionalism from their team. You will always receive prompt and efficient responses to your requests.
The shop has a large display of golf clothing and equipment, including a very comprehensive ladies department. They would also like to offer SdM members a 20% discount on all golf clothing that is not already discounted.
The annual Captain's drive in for this year took place Saturday. Under beautiful blue skys last year's Captain Mel Huxtable putted out on the 18th and new Captain Des Briggs drove off from the first. . Members enjoyed the pre match prayer of deliverance by Geraldine which should eradicate all the demons of the course, such as air shots, hooks, slices and the dreaded shanks and yips; and also keep the club house beer and wine flowing for the foreseeable future, without interruption!
After the ceremony 86 players took to the course, the views were beautiful, the fairways running and the greens receptive.
Post game entertainment was provided by Baz and the prizes were awarded before the dancing started.

The ‘Movember Shave Off’ took place on Tuesday 3rd December, after golf. A staggering 756€ was raised on the day and through sponsorship. Money raised for Algarvean Oncology Association, Captain’s Charity.
